BENEFITS OF EATING DATES

If I had to chose one food to eat for the rest of my life, I would chose DATES!! 🙂  They are so sweet, have such a soft and goey texture and literally taste like caramel. Everyone with a sweet tooth is going to LOVE them. 🙂

Dates really are a SUPERFOOD with many health benefits!! Did you know that you could just live of dates without having any deficiencies?! (was quite surprised when I read that myself!)

Sadly, many people think dates have too much sugar and eating them will make them gain weight. That’s why I thought it’s time to clear that misconception.

  1. Best Healthy Snack

Dates contain zero sodium, zero cholesterol and zero fat which means you can eat as many as you want and never need to worry about weight gain as that makes it literally impossible to gain weight from dates.

  1. Energy Powerhouse

Dates are the greatest energy source due to their high sugar content!! However, even more important is that they also contain a lot of potassium (more than bananas) which helps you to build muscles and maintain your fitness levels.

  1. Great Source of Fibre

Dates are full of fibre wich means the sugar in dates is entering the blood stream slowly while the dates are being digested -> no Insulin spike. Fibre has so many health benefits and is essential for having regular bowel movements too. Fibre helps your body to clean the colon and acts like a sponge which absorbs all the toxins and transports them out of your system. Yayyyy!!

  1. Rich in Copper, Magnesium, Potassium, and Vitamin B6

Potassium and Magnesium are both essential in order to have balanced blood sugar levels. Copper is useful for a better absorption of iron, helps to form collagen and is important for a healthy nervous system. Medjool Dates are packed with these minerals and also have a good amount of Vitamin B6 which has many other health benefits.

  1. Help with weight loss

As you can see dates are loaded with good stuff and contain no fat. They promote digestion, have tons of fibre, lots of vitamins & minerals and a perfect source of energy. They will regulate your blood sugar levels, balance your body’s ph level and help your body to build muscle strength.

Go ahead and get a big box of dates and make them your staple food. They prevent sugar cravings and will help you to lose weight naturally without restricting your calorie intake. :-))

Click here to shop the ones I eat.  They come from the date farm I visited in Israel and you get 5% OFF with the code “CARO”. 🙂

Hope that helps!! 🙂

Do you only eat medjool dates or all types of dates?

Caroline Deisler November 11, 2016 Reply

    Hi Rachel,
i LOVE medjool dates and eat them 99% of the time but i would def eat other dates as well if i can’t find medjool dates. Luckily they are almost everywhere available these days. 🙂

Hi Caroline!
I wonder if you also buy dates in the supermarket, or always fresh dates? The only time I tried dates I saw that sometimes glucose sirop is added and I wonder if you can be sure that there is no additional sugar added when buying dates in a box?
Is there any special reason why you prefer medjool dates to deglect nour dates?
Greetings,
Ahine

Hi Ahine, i usually buy dates out of a 5kg box or I order 5kg boxes online and they are always without any added sugar. 🙂 I prefer medjool dates as i love how big and sweet they are!! 🙂
    Hope that helps!:)

Hi Love, i found a really good fruit and veggie store in Elviria and they had amazing dates. I don’t remember the name but i can find the exact address on google maps. I will find out and get back to you!:) Also I always order Organic Medjoul dates from Israeli-spezialisten.de and they can deliver to Spain as well if you call them. 🙂 Hope that helps:)!

Aw thanks to you both. Elviria is a bit far to go just to get and try dates hehe, I will go to El corte inglés and if I like them, will start ordering online

Hey Caroline, On average how many dates would you eat in a day? Do you ever fill your dates with nut butter?
I’m worried I could eat too many.

Caroline Deisler February 14, 2017 Reply

    Hi Jo,
I eat around 20-30 dates per day. However, I almost never fill them with nut butter just because I like them so much on their own and feel the best eating a low fat diet. I prefer avocados as a source of healthy fats and eat around 3 avocados per week. 🙂 You def don’t have to worry about eating to many dates, they have zero cholesterol, zero sodium and zero fat!:-)
    Hope that helps!:)

      Hee Caroline,

I’m wondering, what about the amount of calories in the dates? It’s a very healthy snack but have a lot of kcal per kilogram right?

I love dates to but are scared to eat a lot of them because of the calories.

        Hi Carlijn

Dates have so so many health benefits and most importantly prevent you from reaching to unhealthy sweets. I have been eating sooo many over the last years and never experienced any weight gain from that.

Its all natural sugar that comes with fibre, water, minerals, vitamins and it doesnt cause a sugar high as convential sweets do.

        Hope that helps!:-))

But even if it has 0 fat it does have a lot of sugar, and sugar turns into fat in your body, nutricionists always tells me to not to eat more then 6 dates in a day because even if its healthy and has a lot of good stuff, the sugar will make me fat, And I do feel I gained weight when I ate more dates or dried fruit

Caroline Deisler May 11, 2018 Reply

        Hi Tania

I totally know what she means, but you have to eat A LOT of sugar to ever gain weight from fruits and the weight gain could totally come from other foods like oils/ processed food/ animal protein etc. I have been eating a high fruit plant based diet for almost 4 years now with lots if dates daily and never gained weight from that. In fact, even got way more toned over the years. 🙂

        Hope that helps! 🙂

Caroline Deisler March 1, 2017 Reply

    Hi Antonella,

there is no limit. 🙂 Also for a non vegan person dates are so much better than any other sweets or chocolate. Eat as much as you desire and don’t worry about the calories. You will automatically eat less other foods and dates have so many health benefits and won’t make you gain weight. :-))

Caroline Deisler April 5, 2017 Reply

    Hi Rafaela,
dates are usually not dried, however, shops also sell dried packaged dates but these are not the ones I am eating. I also love the organic Medjool dates and you can eat as many as you want without worrying about the sugar or calories. I usually eat around 20-25 per day. 🙂

      Liebe Caroline,

Hi,

Eating unlimited dates without gaining weight? I find tht a little hard to believe!

Sure, dates are a much healthier substitute for store bought sweets and chocolate but only if eaten in moderation –
they are still fairly energy dense. For someone who is trying to lose weight, I don’t think gauging on unlimited dates in their diet every day is going to help them reach their weight loss goals.

Caroline Deisler April 20, 2017 Reply

    HI Zara,
i totally understand your concern but there is a big difference in maintaining a healthy weight and losing weight. I have been eaten an unlimited amount of dates for the past 3 years and never experienced any weight gain. In fact, I got way more toned and fit.

Karin April 18, 2017 Reply

Hi Caroline! I love dates as much as you do, but I’m a little confused about how you can eat as many dates and not gain weight. While they do have zero fat content etc, since they’re high in calorie & sugar, can’t you gain weight from eating too many? Cause in 1 date theres about 50-60 calories so if you eat like 5 thats about 300 calories right there, and over 60 grams of sugar! Just wanted you to clarify what you meant about eating as many and not gaining weight (especially since I’m trying to lose a few pounds) xx

Caroline Deisler June 23, 2017 Reply

    Hi Karin 🙂

Dates do have quite a lot of calories but they hav so many healthy benefits too and can help to lose weight as they regulate your blood sugar levels, have lots of fibrex minerals and most importantly prevent sweet cravings. You wont
need any other vegan sweets (that are usually high in fat and therefore not ideal for weight loss) if you eat dates on a daily basis. Try to replace a meal by 12-15 dates (720-900kcal) and you will get great resulsts. Hope that helps:-))!

Desiree De Palma November 7, 2017 Reply

Hi Caroline!

I am starting to read all your blog posts so bear with me it I ask too many questions haha. I am super interested in your lifestyle, because I LOVE to eat in such high quantities like you, but of course I often find myself feeling guilty etc. My body structure is similar to yours (not so lean, I wish I get there soon!), so I am interested in losing a bit of weight but ultimately just getting leaner.

Today I literally ate a whole box of dates (like 20 dates), so I guess my question is even though dates have so many health benefits, aren’t the high sugar levels bad at one point? It’s not so much about the calories that concerns me, but more of the sugar side of it. I am not scared of calories or sugar in fruits, but 100 g of sugar does sound unusual to me. Can you explain me a bit more of how this sugar levels in dates react in the body?

Best,
Desiree

Caroline Deisler November 21, 2017 Reply

    Hi Love

Thank you so much! So glad to hear that you feel inspired to try this lifestyle. 🙂

I have been eating 20 dates or more almost every day for the past 3 years and never gained weight from it. In fact, I got so much leaner & fitter and thats also partly due to the dates. 🙂 They come with lots of fibre which means the sugar does not go directly into your blood stream and is being absorbed slowly during the digestion. Dates are high in sugar, im not going to deny that :-)) but its all healthy sugar and the best part is that eating dates will make you crave no other sweets anymore!! Before I started eating dates, I was very into raw chocolates and all kinds of raw vegan deserts which taste great but didn’t make me feel my best. That really changed and they became a solid part of my diet. 🙂

    Hope that helps!

Hey Caroline,

I also loveeee dates, and because of you I now eat way more dates then I did before.
I used to eat mozafati dates, but then I found Mejool dates in my town.
But when I splitted the mejool dates in half, there were little insects in my date, do you also sometimes have that?
Now I switched back to the mozafati dates, do they have the same health benefits as the mejool dates?

Love your blog!! 🙂

I also love mazafati dates but kind of prefer medjool dates as they are a little bigger and taste like pure caramel 🙂 ….the insect can happen from time to time but really does happen a lot. Have you tried the 5kg medjool date box from Koro? They are so so yummmm and you get 5% with the code CARO 🙂

    Hope that helps!

Hi Caroline,
I am really into dates, but read online to only eat 2-5 a day as they skyrocket your digestion and apparently would give you the runs otherwise? Which is why I am afraid to eat more – so I am wondering how you can eat so many and feel good while I have read that others experience digestion problems once they do sorry if this is too personal!
Xx Lulu
Also I love adding walnuts into the dates and putting them into the oven for 15 min – they get v chewy and taste like caramel then ❤️ Maybe you’ll like it too !!!

Caroline Deisler May 11, 2018 Reply

    Hi Luisa

Dates have so many amazing benefits and contain only natural sugar which gives you tons of energy and won’t mess with your blood sugar as they come with lots of fiber, minerals, vitamins and water. I have been feeling my best some eating that way and couldn’t recommend it more:):)

It´s always the best to find a balance that works for you and your body but from my personal experience, I highly recommend to eat more dates instead of other sweets. 🙂
