I have been eating a lot of cooked food lately and since i felt incredibly fit on the raw lifestyle during summer, I decided to go back to fully raw for a few weeks. I thought i’d share this challenge with you to motivate you to join me. I don’t like to pressure myself too much so i will go day by day and see how i feel. Even if you just do one raw day per week you will get amazing benefits and hey, there’s nothing better than ending the year with a healthy and positive attitude! 🙂 .
WHAT DO YOU EAT ON A RAW VEGAN DIET?
I am going to eat mostly fresh fruits and dates during the day and probably make zucchini noodles and large salads for dinner. I love to go grocery shopping every day but it’s good to buy the basics in large quantities to get discounts and to make sure you have enough food at home. Bananas, dates, melon, apples etc. will be my staple food and i usually buy them in big boxes. Ask your local organic shop and supermarket if they give you a good price when buying large amounts of fruit. Most of the time they are willing to do that. 🙂
Dinners should be a bit more veggie focused as it is also important to eat your greens and vegetables. Zucchini noodles and large salads are my favourites. However, i will still start my dinner with a fruit plate and love to have dates for desert.
Please don’t get me wrong, i still love cooked food and could never live without it as i don’t want to be that limited with food choices. However, once in a while i think it’s great to eat fully raw for a few days or weeks to support your immune system and to give your body more nutrients and minerals. Your thoughts are clearer, your sleep improves, you skin clears up and you will have tons of energy.
BENEFITS FROM EATING FULLY RAW
A raw food diet most likely eliminates constipation. You might feel a bit bloated the first few days, but that will go away once your body is used to eating more raw foods. Your body will naturally cleanse itself and gets more nutrients and minerals from raw food as most vitamins & enzymes are heat sensitive and die once you cook them.
Vitamin C is on of the most important vitamins in order to have a strong immune system. Eating lots of raw fruits and vegetables like kiwis, broccoli, spinach, red bell pepper etc. will provide you with a large doses of Vitamin C which is going to prevent you from having a cold. Especially during this time of the year it can be very beneficial to eat a lot of fruits, salads and to drink green smoothies. I know it’s not the most warming food but it will make you strong and healthy from the inside out.
I am mentioning weight loss here because i get asked all the time if it’s possible to lose weight on a vegan diet. Yes, you will most likely lose weight on a vegan diet and especially on a high carb raw vegan diet where the majority of your calories comes from fresh fruit. I always tell people not to focus on weight and instead to focus on getting FIT, HEALTHY and HAPPY as the weight loss will come naturally. Fruits are low in calories so you have to make sure to eat enough (I eat between 2500-3500 kcal from fruit per day). You will still lose weight as calories from fruit affect your body differently than calories from animal or dairy products. A raw vegan diet is also by far the best way to maintain a healthy weight once you lost the unwanted kilos. I am not saying you have to go fully raw to stay in shape but just keep in mind that it is always powerful to have a few raw days once in a while. :-))
Whenever my skin is starting to break out i try to drink more green smoothies and eat more raw meals. Cooked meals, especially at restaurants are often quite oily and salty which can cause breakouts. Eating raw is very hydrating and will nourish your skin from the inside out. Green smoothies with Spinach, kale, parsley, lemons and pineapple or mango are amazing for your skin and will give you that healthy glow. :-))
Since raw meals digest quite quickly you won’t go to bed feeling heavy. You also wake up feeling much fresher and more awake. I felt that it was easier to get up in the morning and go for a run if I ate raw the night before. Eating high carb vegan including cooked food is already SO HEALTHY for you and definitely more sustainable long term, but giving your body a break and eating fully raw can give you great results.
