Going fully raw?

Hi Guys,

I have been eating a lot of cooked food lately and since i felt incredibly fit on the raw lifestyle during summer, I decided to go back to fully raw for a few weeks. I thought i’d share this challenge with you to motivate you to join me. I don’t like to pressure myself too much so i will go day by day and see how i feel. Even if you just do one raw day per week you will get amazing benefits and hey, there’s nothing better than ending the year with a healthy and positive attitude! 🙂 .

I am going to eat mostly fresh fruits and dates during the day and probably make zucchini noodles and  large salads for dinner. I love to go grocery shopping every day but it’s good to buy the basics in large quantities to get discounts and to make sure you have enough food at home. Bananas, dates, melon, apples etc. will be my staple food and i usually buy them in big boxes. Ask your local organic shop and supermarket if they give you a good price when buying large amounts of fruit. Most of the time they are willing to do that. 🙂

Dinners should be a bit more veggie focused as it is also important to eat your greens and vegetables. Zucchini noodles and large salads are my favourites. However, i will still start my dinner with a fruit plate and love to have dates for desert.

Please don’t get me wrong, i still love cooked food and could never live without it as i don’t want to be that limited with food choices. However, once in a while i think it’s great to eat fully raw for a few days or weeks to support your immune system and to give your body more nutrients and minerals. Your thoughts are clearer, your sleep improves, you skin clears up and you will have tons of energy.

A raw food diet most likely eliminates constipation. You might feel a bit bloated the first few days, but that will go away once your body is used to eating more raw foods. Your body will naturally cleanse itself and gets more nutrients and minerals from raw food as most vitamins & enzymes are heat sensitive and die once you cook them.

Vitamin C is on of the most important vitamins in order to have a strong immune system. Eating lots of raw fruits and vegetables like kiwis, broccoli, spinach, red bell pepper etc. will provide you with a large doses of Vitamin C which is going to prevent you from having a cold. Especially during this time of the year it can be very beneficial to eat a lot of fruits, salads and to drink green smoothies. I know it’s not the most warming food but it will make you strong and healthy from the inside out.

Weight loss

I am mentioning weight loss here because i get asked all the time if it’s possible to lose weight on a vegan diet. Yes, you will most likely lose weight on a vegan diet and especially on a high carb raw vegan diet where the majority of your calories comes from fresh fruit. I always tell people not to focus on weight and instead to focus on getting FIT, HEALTHY and HAPPY as the weight loss will come naturally. Fruits are low in calories so you have to make sure to eat enough (I eat between 2500-3500 kcal from fruit per day). You will still lose weight as calories from fruit affect your body differently than calories from animal or dairy products. A raw vegan diet is also by far the best way to maintain a healthy weight once you lost the unwanted kilos. I am not saying you have to go fully raw to stay in shape but just keep in mind that it is always powerful to have a few raw days once in a while. :-))

Whenever my skin is starting to break out i try to drink more green smoothies and eat more raw meals. Cooked meals, especially at restaurants are often quite oily and salty which can cause breakouts. Eating raw is very hydrating and will nourish your skin from the inside out. Green smoothies with Spinach, kale, parsley, lemons and pineapple or mango are amazing for your skin and will give you that healthy glow. :-))

Since raw meals digest quite quickly  you won’t go to bed feeling heavy. You also wake up feeling much fresher and more awake. I felt that it was easier to get up in the morning and go for a run if I ate raw the night before. Eating high carb vegan including cooked food is already SO HEALTHY for you and definitely more sustainable long term, but giving your body a break and eating fully raw can give you great results.

I will share most of what I eat in my Instagram stories so keep an eye on that if you are keen for some food inspirations. 🙂

I hope you enjoyed reading this post and maybe got inspired to eat more fresh fruits and vegetables.:-)
Have a lovely Day!

Hello Caroline! I am wondering where do you get your proteins from? Do you take any supplements?
Thank you very much

Caroline Deisler February 6, 2017 Reply

    Hi Renata,
I get my protein from fruits and vegetables. Bananas, spinach, broccoli, potatoes, sweet potatoes, chickpeas, lentils and nuts are all great protein sources. I love to make a spinach, kale, broccoli, banana smoothie after my workouts! :-))

    To your other questions:
    – I love coconut water and use coconut milk for curries and thai dishes. I don’t eat any vegan yogurt, however, I love coconut yogurt but since i always have fruits/ smoothies for breakfast and don’t eat it that often.

    – I highly suggest to take probiotics for at least 2-3 months after taking antibiotics. I love the brand Bio Kult and take to probiotics mostly every night before going to bed.

    – I use water as a base for my smoothies and don’t drink a lot of vegan milks. I prefer fresh fruits instead and use more bananas if i want the smoothie to be more “milky” 🙂

I hope this helps! 🙂 Have a lovely monday!

Hi Caroline. Do you have any tips about aiding the bloat? I seem to bloat and it takes an irregularly long time to go down. You have such a flat tummy! How do I achieve that! You’re an inspiration.

    Hi Elisabeth,
Thank you so much:-). Apologies for the late response!

    Here are a few tips:
    1. Make sure the fruits are ripe
    2. Eat fruit mono meals -> bananas or melons for breakfast/ mangos or dates for lunch etc.
    3. Drink around 3-4 liter of water per day
    4. be active. cardio is always helping with digestion
    5. Start your dinner with a green salad or drink green smoothies.

    Hope that helps:-)!

Hi! I’m considering experimenting with going raw for a week and have a few questions.
1. Is it okay to drink herbal teas while going raw?
2. Do you have any meal ideas besides fruits and veggies? (which I love, but also would like variety)
Thanks, and love your blog!
– Chuc 🙂

    Hi Chuc,
absolutely! Herbal teas are great and i drink around 2 teas every day:-)! fruit Smoothies/ green smoothies, lots of different Salads, Zucchini Noodles, Raw sushi rolls, energy balls (made from dates and nuts) … Personally, i would focus on eating mainly ripe sweet fruits as this will give you most benefits especially if you are only doing it for a week. If you eat a lot of high fat raw deserts etc. you will probably feel tired and won’t be full of energy. Make sure you get enough simple carbs in and drink a lot of water. The simpler the meal the better for your digestion. 🙂 Hope that helps! 🙂 xx Caroline

Hi. I follow you on Instagram and absolutely love your blog!
Please can you provide a daily menu of what you eat and the quantities?
Im considering going vegan..☺️
Thanks so much

    Hi Lelani,
there is a post about what I eat in a week. I love to eat A LOT of fruits during the day and now that its colder I often have steamed potatoes, toasted rye bread with avocado or vegan sushi for dinner. Whenever its warmer and there is a lot of ripe fruits available i love to eat 100% raw as i feel like i have even more energy that way.
Let me know if the “what i eat in a week” post helps! 🙂

Hi !
Your body is my dream body ! But I have a little question 🙂 Did you just change your meals , your eating etc in one day or was this process longer ?

Caroline Deisler January 1, 2017 Reply

    Hi Sonia,
thank you so much!:) I have always been a big fruit lover but the process of becoming vegan took me around a year. I have been vegan most of the time during that year but found it extremely hard to give a cheese. It was just a matter of time that I realized it really doesn’t make me feel good and I decided to be 100% vegan after watching tons of youtube videos (i used to watch Freelee the banana girl). This was about 2,5 years ago and I couldn’t be happier about my decision.:-))
    Hope this helps!

Eating many many fruits is not a good idea, isnt it? For instance breakfast, lunch, they give luch sugar… Have you already seen your doctor while doing your diet? I don t mean that you re not doing well it s just for checking if everything inside of you is good? Thanks for your kindness! Andrea

Caroline Deisler December 26, 2016 Reply

    Hi Andrea,
i have just recently had my blood checked and everything was 100% fine. 🙂 The sugar from fruits is so so good for you as you need that energy and fruits are the easiest way to nourish your cells. Seriously, please never worry about the sugar in fruits. Most people who try to avoid fruits bc of the sugar are then eating chocolate and other high fat junk food which is much worse! Always eat as much fruit as you wish and never count calories of fruits. Fruits are the PERFECT FOOD and make you feel fresh, fit and alive.
    Hope that helps 🙂

That’s great! I don’t know why but I started to get scared when I did this kind of diet. Maybe scared because I don’t believe that everything’s going to work well. Did you already think about your image? don’t you consider your body is too skinny, do you? How do you get used with it? And how about people’s thoughts about your lifestyle and your body? Family is the one who always criticize, and was there any prob with your family?

      Thank you again x

Andrea’s my besfriend so I replied for her 😉

Caroline Deisler January 1, 2017 Reply

        Hi Elisabeth,
i love my body and I want to inspire other girls to love their body no matter what other people think. I am quite skinny and that is my bone structure/body type. Don’t listen to people who are criticizing your body. All that matters is that you are healthy and happy from the inside out. 🙂
My family had to get used to me being vegan but once they saw that it made me super fit and happy they were 100% supporting it. I think it is very important to explain why you are doing it and give them as much information as possible. Now my mom, dad and my brother are all eating vegan more than 50% of the time. I made them try Medjool dates and they all love them!!! Its all about inspiring your family to try the same so they can experience similar benefits. 🙂
        Hope that helps love! 🙂

That’s wonderful that you finally explained and everything worked well with your family ! My biggest problem is difficult to explain because they don’t trust their children as they already had many experiences and getting older. They don’t see a skinny person as a healthy body, because it doesn’t have any fat! I believe it’s because they already saw many bad speech, image, thought about getting skinny from media so they get afraid of that, I understand them but I just can’t be myself if they always criticize and stop me doing what I want to eat, do etc. How can I explain them correctly and change their mind?

Sorry for asking you again and again ! x

Show them documentaries like “Food Inc.”, “Food Matters”, “Hungry for change”, “Earthlings” this will help you to explain why you are choosing to eat that way!:-)

Caroline Deisler December 14, 2016 Reply

    Hi Aurelia,
    hoffe ich konnte helfen!

Caroline Deisler December 10, 2016 Reply

    Hi Cami,
I don’t really eat nuts. 🙂 I prefer avocados for healthy fats as i find nuts are a bit hard to digest sometimes. 🙂

Aww no I love bananas and have them mostly every day in a smoothie or as a snack. I also love apple and pears, might be just that I don’t photograph them as much. 🙂

Hi Caroline, i would like to know if dried fruit such as dried figs are good for weight loss??

Caroline Deisler December 6, 2016 Reply

Hi Sophia, they are good but for weight loss it might be better to focus on eating fresh fruit as they are high in water and especially for weight loss its important to be hydrated and to drink a lot of water. 🙂
    Hope that helps!:-)

Hi Caroline,

I love your blog and instagram. You are very inspiring. Do you ever eat nut butters (peanut butter, almond butter, etc.)? Also, do you eat other types of dried fruits like figs or raisins or mostly just stick to dates?

Caroline Deisler November 26, 2016 Reply

Hi Jacquelyn, thank you so much! So glad to hear that:)) I love peanut butter cups as a sweet treat but i don’t eat them daily. I mostly stick to dates as i love them sooo much and have them every day!:-)
